A night of terror in Kastoria where a loud explosion of unknown cause swept through the famous “Tsamis” hotel and shook almost the entire prefecture! According to the first information, there was no one in the building, so the concern for human lives was reduced very quickly.
As it became known, shortly after 1.30 in the morning and while the city of Kastoria tried to find its rhythms after the long confinement, the silence of the night was torn by the loudest explosion. It was so strong, according to testimonies, that most of the residents jumped out of their beds in fear and went out onto the balconies or onto the street to realize what was happening! Although the “Tsamis” hotel is located on the outskirts of the urban complex, the windows of the neighboring buildings were broken by the shock wave, while other damage in the surroundings is not ruled out.
The three-story building was razed! Eyewitnesses at the scene speak of small fires that continued and continued to burn for quite some time. Almost the entire force of the Kastoria fire service rushed to the scene, while police officers cordoned off the area for security reasons. Iron, concrete, glass and rubble from the hotel have been spread within a 100-meter radius as authorities blocked the main road leading into the city for security reasons.
The West Macedonia Fire Service Regional Directorate indicated that, according to the owner, the hotel had not been in operation for the last year due to pandemic measures, it was closed and there were no people on its premises. Despite the reassuring news, firefighters and police did not stop the search in the early hours …
The “Tsamis” hotel had a capacity of 80 beds and was considered one of the best in the city, although it was built many decades ago. Its rooms have hosted important political personalities and important events have taken place.
Investigations into the causes of the powerful explosion that caused its complete destruction are being carried out by the Kastoria Fire Service and Security.
