“We are in a critical situation,” said Swiss President Simoneta Samaruga, adding that the increase in the epidemic was “exponential” and that hospitals “had reached their limits.”

Health has never been so bad with almost 5,000 new cases a day, compared to a few hundred during the first wave, and a percentage of positive diagnostic tests that remains at very high levels.

Authorities announced today 5,136 new cases and 106 additional deaths in Switzerland and the neighboring principality of Liechtenstein.
