Sweden: Parents ‘keep their children in prison’ at home for 4 months due to coronavirus

Parents in Sweden kept their three “imprisoned” children at home for four months because they were terrified of the coronavirus pandemic.

Authorities removed the children, aged 10 to 17, from the family, their lawyer, Michael Svegfors, told AFP.

From March to early July, “the children and families were not allowed to leave the apartment,” the children’s attorney said, adding that “the parents were so terrified of the pandemic.”

According to the Jonkoping court, where the events took place, the children remained locked in their rooms and were not allowed to move inside the apartment. In addition, the front door was “nailed” so that no one could leave, something that the parents deny through their lawyer.

The parents are from another country and do not speak Swedish well, Svegfors said. “They continued to monitor their homeland information via the Internet,” he added, without naming his country of origin, adding that strict containment measures had been imposed there due to the coronavirus.

Unlike most countries, which imposed a lockdown on the pandemic outbreak, Sweden took a different approach, targeting herd immunity. It did not impose restrictive measures, kept schools open for children under the age of 16, and urged citizens to “assume their responsibilities.”
