For your bet Summit Regarding Turkey, the Prime Minister spoke, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, upon arrival at the European Council.
The Prime Minister, after presenting the issues under discussion, spoke about Turkey’s criminal behavior in Eastern mediterranean. “At the October European Council, all Heads of State and Government decided that there would be consequences if Turkey continued its criminal behavior.”, he said. He also noted that “What is at stake is very clear, very clear: the credibility of the European Union”, to emphasize that “Now, then, it will be seen if we, as Europe, are really credible in what we have agreed.” Pacta sunt servanda “(the agreements must be fulfilled)”.
The Prime Minister’s statement is as follows:
In the extremely rich agenda of Europeans Summit I highlight two issues that are particularly important: the first concerns the pending veto of Hungary and Poland on the approval of the budget and the Recovery Fund. I believe that the proposal, the compromise, which has been reached, is going in the right direction and that this question, the pending one, will end today.
As you know, Greece is one of the first countries that has already submitted its own detailed plan on how to use the resources of the Recovery Fund. It is very important, given the magnitude of the economic crisis, that the money from the Recovery Fund falls into the real economies of Europe as soon as possible.
The second issue that will concern us is the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean and our relations with Turkey. What is at stake here is very clear, very clear: the credibility of the European Union. At the October European Council, all Heads of State and Government decided that there would be consequences if Turkey continued its criminal behavior. And we agreed that the decision-making date will be this European Council, the December European Council. Now, then, it will be seen whether we, like Europe, are really credible in what we ourselves have agreed. “Pacta sunt servanda”.
