Both of them were stolen from the Holy Monastery of Agia Triada located in Oxia, Karditsa along with other artifacts and were posted to Interpol’s Wish Art Database with photos and full details.

About three months ago, last October, an archaeologist from the Directorate for Documentation and Protection of Cultural Property of the Ministry of Culture and Sports located the images in a catalog for an auction scheduled for November in the German city of Dusseldorf. Both the official record and their photos and their inscriptions significantly helped in their identification. The icon of Christ Pantocrator had the inscription “ἐκ Θεσσαλονίκης. χεῖρ Μαργαρίτη ».

Immediately after the identification of the images with those on the next auction list, the location and confiscation operation began to return to the place where they belong, in Greece. They finally settled in Lebanon and, after their auction, their transfer to Germany was scheduled. .

The Greek Ministry of Culture informed the judicial authorities and the competent investigator at the Karditsa Court of First Instance submitted a request for legal assistance to the Lebanese prosecutor’s office. Once the investigation process was completed, the two images were confiscated by the Attorney General of the Supreme Court of Lebanon and their return to the Greek state was ordered, which will take place in the next period.
