The complaint made by his world-famous athlete through Twitter has caused a sensation, as well as his online confrontation with the Minister of Sports and the Secretary General of Sports.
“We came to ask for some money back,” the Olympian said yesterday in a post, attaching her interview to Insidethegames, where she accused the sports leadership of trying to “eat” the bonuses of the athletes who won medals at the World Championships and from Europe.
It points out that the State has requested the return of the bronze medal in the 2016 Indoor Track and Field, while it points out that neither Papachristou nor Filippidis will receive money for the medals won in 2017.
What followed, however, was unprecedented, as Katerina Stefanidi responded with an inelegant style and singularly the Minister of Sports himself. Lefteris Avgenakis stated that “they have already been informed since October 29, by me and by GGA associates, that the will is clear: the matter will be resolved immediately and legally.”
I made it clear that we are moving forward with the legislation as no other way can be found in cooperation with the Federation. Good follow up for the reply “Mr. Avgenaki, I have absolutely no information and I have sent two emails to your office in the last week, neither of which have been answered. I have not heard from anyone about legislation.”
The Secretary General for Sports also positioned himself in the controversy and followed the following dialogue:
Mavrotas: Katerina, as you may know from around her, we are trying to find a legal solution to the problem that has been created due to the fact that the law only recognizes open track and field events as rewarding. We are trying to fix the problem we found.
Stefanidi: Mr. Mavrotas, the law is nowhere mentioned in the circumstances. Only in Pan-European and World Championships. But independently there is no information on a legislative solution. Look for all my unanswered emails.
Mavrotas: The obstacle Katerina is in article 34 of 2725/1999 in paragraph 10b (see attached), this is what we are trying to correct. I spoke with a relative that the only solution is by order, I thought he was informed. Even now you know that we are seeing it. Thank you.
