Stefanidis complaint: “They ask us to return the money for the medals” – Avgenaki’s response

Katerina Stefanidi complained that she was asked to return a bonus money for winning the bronze medal at the 2016 World Indoor Track and Field Championships.

According to the APE-MPE, it was immediately expected that the Vice Minister of Sports, Lefteris Avgenakis, would proceed to a provision that would correct the ambiguity that existed in Law 2725/99 (art. 34), in order to understand that the successes of the protagonists in the World and European Indoor Track and Field Championships, as is the case with success on the open track and field and the Olympic Games.

The attempt at legislative regulation was confirmed, after a tweet from Katerina Stefanidi, in which she wrote that “we have to ask for the money back”, accompanied by an interview with “insidethegames”.

Both the Deputy Minister of Sports, Lefteris Avgenakis, and the Secretary General for Sports, George Mavrotas, responded to the “golden” Olympic and world champion in short jump, reports APE-MPE.

“You have already been informed since October 29, by me and by associates of the GGA, that the will is clear: the matter will be resolved immediately and legally. I made it clear that we are moving forward with the legislation as no other way can be found in cooperation with the Federation. Good continuation “, was the response of the Vice Minister of Sports, and the Secretary General added:” Katerina, as you may know from your surroundings, we are trying to find a legal solution to the issue that has been created because the law only recognizes the events of open track and field as rewarded. We are trying to fix the problem we found. “

Stefanidis’s complaint

The Greek Olympian told “Insidethegames”: “Neither Papachristou nor Filippidis will receive money for the medals they won in 2017 at the European Indoor Championships and if they continue this will affect other athletes who won medals in their European 2019.

This also affects me but not so much because it would get me 20% because I have better medals on the open track except for the European 2018. The crazy thing is that they ask for money back to 2016 and not to another year and the law has existed since 1999.

So we definitely feel like we are being attacked. They are trying to find ways to save money by hurting athletes and basically going against the law with funny excuses. The current minister is supposed to try to fix it, but many months have passed since there has been no progress and the minister does not even respond to the emails sent to him by all the medalists on the closed track since 2016.

They sent an email to the Federation asking if indoor and open track racing are the same. I am not a lawyer, but I know there is no correct answer to this question. We all feel that they are trying to trap us with this question and regardless of the answer they will find an excuse. “
