Finance Minister Christos Staikouras in a full interview with CNN Greece journalist Amalia Katzou.
The minister announced that the government will immediately begin the procedures for the third reimbursement advance in October, to which 165,000 companies have requested.
It characterizes the liquidity of companies as a key point and announces the disbursement, estimates, of the total amount of the repayable advance.
In July, 2 billion euros fell in the real economy, Staikouras said, while he estimated that in the next period 4 to 5 billion euros will fall in the market.
The government is taking initiatives to channel resources into the economy until the market itself is balanced, the minister said.
Regarding the budget, Staikouras said the ministry has calmed down to some extent with estimates ranging between 8% and 9% in recession terms.
“Based on current data, there will be no substantial changes from the July estimates,” he added.
When asked if the economy can withstand a new lockdown, the minister replied: I want to be clear. No Ministry of Finance wants restrictions on economic activity. The consequences of a restriction to any economic activity are therefore painful».
“But if you ask me, and this is the crucial question, if ‘you have the weapons, the money available to cope,’ the answer is ‘yes.’ replied the minister. “We have ‘hoarded’ the cash to support whatever choice the government makes to address the health crisis.”
