The Spanish government will hold an emergency meeting tomorrow morning to consider the possibility of declaring a state of emergency throughout the country, according to an official statement issued today.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez “called an emergency cabinet meeting at 10:00 am local time to review the conditions for a new state of emergency to come into effect,” the statement said, adding that the initiative was “accepted by the majority of the autonomous communities of Spain, which requested it ”.

The move will give the 17 regions the legal tools necessary to impose stricter restrictions, including traffic bans, to stop the spread of the virus.

The special cabinet meeting comes days after Spain surpassed one million new coronavirus cases.

The “real number” of infections exceeds 3 million

The “real number” of people infected by COVID-19 in Spain since the beginning of the pandemic “exceeds three million,” said the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez.

“The situation is serious,” he said in a televised speech during which he did not announce new measures, which seemed to be aimed primarily at preparing Spaniards for new restrictions in the near future, when the regions in charge of public health reach an agreement. with the central government.

Sánchez recalled that Spain officially exceeded the limit of one million cases of the new coronavirus this week.

But he added that “the real number of infected people already exceeds three million of our compatriots”, which explains this huge difference with the fact that the proportion of people identified as positive was very low at the beginning of the pandemic.

“Now we have the majority of cases, about 70%,” he said, compared to a peak of 10% during the first wave.
