South Africa is facing a new strain of coronavirus, which is causing a second wave of infections.
As the Minister of Health announced today: “We are calling this information to the public today to announce that a variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, currently named 501.V2 Variant, has been identified by our scientists, experts in genomics, here in South Africa” .
“The data that has been collected, therefore, strongly suggests that the current second wave that we are experiencing is due to this new variant,” Minister Zueli Mize added in a Twitter post.
The World Health Organization said Monday that it was aware of a new strain of coronavirus that has appeared in Britain, but there is no evidence that it behaves differently from existing types of the virus.
South Africa has recorded the highest number of coronavirus cases in Africa, nearly 900,000 and more than 20,000 deaths.
This week the government stepped up restrictive measures, due to the increase in cases.
