‘Sex party’ in Brussels: the past of former MEP Josef Sajer from the Fidesz party

Hungarian politician Josef Sajier resigned from Prime Minister Victor Orban’s ruling Fidesz party after being arrested last week in Brussels for attempting to abandon an orgy party by descending the gutter of a building.

The prime minister himself told the Magyar Nemzet daily that Sayer’s actions were “unacceptable” and went against the values of the Conservative Party, which claims to be a defender of traditional Christian and family values.

Sayer is a founding member of Fidesz and has been a close ally of Orban for more than 30 years. He even played a key role in the revision of the Hungarian Constitution, after Orban won the 2010 elections.

“The actions of Congressman Joseph Sayer are incompatible with the values of our political family,” Orban was quoted as saying by the newspaper. “We will not forget or deny his 30 years of work, but his actions are unforgivable and unacceptable. After that, he made the only proper decision, when he apologized and resigned as a member of the European Parliament and Fidesz, he added.

Sayer tendered his resignation as MEP on Sunday, citing unclear “ethical” reasons. In a new statement Tuesday, he apologized for violating Belgian law.

Last week, Belgian police arrested about 20 men at a party in Brussels. Among them was Sayer, who, according to police, had drugs. The Hungarian politician denies using drugs and claims that he offered to get tested on the spot, but something did not happen.

Political analysts believe the incident could have repercussions for Orban, whose conservative government has for years promoted Christian family values and stepped up its anti-gay rhetoric. The revelation exploded like a bomb in Budapest, where the opposition and the press denounce the hypocrisy of the government, which attacks the LGBTQI community.

The independent website Telex, noting that it does not judge anyone’s privacy, points out that the problem “is a lie, dishonesty.” Fidesz recalled “attacking sexual minorities in Hungary, saying it protects normality.”

“While (Joseph Sayer) was having fun in Brussels, a city open to LGBTQI, he made life miserable for them in Hungary by rewriting the Constitution,” wrote Sampolks Pani, a journalist for the investigative site Direkt36, on Twitter.

It should be noted that the 59-year-old politician’s wife, Tude Hado, is currently a member of the Hungarian Constitutional Court.

Sayer, a lawyer, was identified as one of the politicians who drafted the new constitution, which was approved in 2011. There is an article in this text that defines marriage as “a union between a man and a woman”, as the government wanted defend “Christian values”.

The Orban government now wants to stipulate that “mother is a woman, father is a man”, to prohibit same-sex couples from adopting children and gender reassignment at registry offices.

“While the Fidesz politicians have taught us lessons about Christianity and the family, they are living a completely different life,” said former Prime Minister Ferenc Gursani.

The case is reminiscent of that of the mayor of Gyor, a city that is Hungary’s financial lung, who was involved in a scandal last year when photos of him were published from a “sex party” on a yacht. But “this time it is not a local official who was caught red-handed, but the number one author of the Constitution, the founder of Fidesz and his confidant Victor Orban,” Telex said.

“The disappearance of Joseph Sayer”, who was well acquainted with the Brussels bureaucracy since he was a member of the European Parliament since 2004, “will weaken Victor Orban’s position,” said political scientist Zoltan Lackner of Jelen magazine.
