Seven people vaccinated with the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine have died from blood clots, out of a total of 30 such cases reported so far, the British Medicines Agency (MHRA) announced today.

Of the 30 incidents recorded as of March 24, “seven sadly ended,” the MHRA said in a statement.

The regulator said it had been notified of 22 cases of cerebral venous thrombosis and another eight cases of platelet deficiency thrombosis on March 24, and had received a total of 18.1 million doses of the vaccine.

“A thorough investigation of these incidents is underway,” MHRA Director June Raine said in a statement. He clarified that no similar case has been reported for the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine.

“The benefits of the AstraZeneca vaccine in preventing Covid-19 infection and its complications continue to far outweigh the risks, and the public must continue to receive the vaccine they should receive,” he added.

In an opinion released Thursday on the side effects of vaccines administered in the country, the MHRA had indicated that “the risk of developing this type of blood clot is very small.”

Overall, “the number and nature of adverse reactions reported so far are not uncommon compared to other types of vaccines in widespread use.”
