St. Eustatius

Great martyr of the Christian church, whose memory is commemorated on September 20. This day is celebrated by the so-called Efstathios and Efstathia.

Eustathios was originally called Plakida and he was a senior officer in the Roman army. One day while hunting a deer, he saw a cross on its horns and heard a voice calling him to become a Christian. With this vision he believed in the new religion and was baptized as a Christian named Eustathios. His wife Tatian, who took the name Theopistis, and his two sons, who took the names Agapios and Theopistos, were also baptized Christians.

When the Emperor Trajan was informed that his officer had embraced Christianity, he dismissed him and exiled him along with his family. Later, his punishment included separation from his family, a fact that infuriated Efstathios greatly.

Years later, Trajan remembered his most capable officer, Eustathios, when he was in trouble, and brought him back to the army. Along the way, he met his family again and felt great joy.

However, Trajan’s successor, Hadrian, demanded that Eustathios worship idols again. Efstathios refused, as a result of which he and his family were tortured to death.
