The possibility is open that later the Lyceums and Gymnasiums and the elementary schools are closed if it is considered necessary.
After the dramatic increase in cases – yesterday they broke the 3,000 barrier – the closure of primary schools not only in Thessaloniki but also throughout the country has entered the debate table.
One of the scenarios is to close primary schools and kindergartens, in the next scenario everything will be closed for 15 days.
However, even though the Ministry of Education leadership has not yet received a relevant suggestion from the experts, it nevertheless states that it is ready for how lessons will be given if there are new suggestions.
Kerameans for schools
We do not have any suggestions for the closure of primary schools, Education Minister Niki Kerameos said, but stressed that because there is an outbreak of the pandemic, suggestions from experts are awaited.
As he stated, speaking with SKAI, since the beginning of the crisis they have been listening to experts and experts have not yet recommended this while the data shows that there is no tendency to spread within schools.
According to the data, less than 1% of the school units (Kindergartens – Elementary Schools) are in full suspension at a rate of 0.9365%, and School Departments with partial suspension at a rate of 0.6682%.
At the same time, the Minister of Health, Vassilis Kikilias, left open the possibility of closing the Primary Schools if the cases do not decrease in the coming days.
How the lessons will be done
In the event of the suspension of the operation of primary schools, the Minister of Education stated that they will move to two levels that are ready:
Educational television: More than 220 lessons have been filmed from scratch, a library has been built on the voluntary offer of teachers that will be carried out in collaboration with ERT for the projection of educational episodes
Long distance education: At the same time, the Minister pointed out that all gyms and high schools today are in distance education without problems, while pointing out that “arrhythmias will exist and we are here to solve them, we are talking about a huge project with the 2nd day of education distance to have the participation of more than 3.2 million connected students and more than 9 million minutes of lessons “.
91,613 tablets and laptops in schools
A total of 91,613 tablets and laptops are available from the Ministry of Education for the distance education needs of students, with a budget of more than 24 million euros.
Specifically, 65,965 portable devices worth more than 20 million euros through the NSRF and 25,648 portable devices worth more than 4 million euros through donations have been provided by the Ministry of Education for primary and secondary schools nationwide, responding to the first coronavirus pandemic, launching additional equipment as early as spring.
This equipment, which has already been delivered or will be delivered to schools, is owned by the schools and is available to students and / or teachers for temporary use, in order to facilitate the implementation of distance education, but also to contribute long-term to deepening digital skills. Priority is given to supporting families on the basis of social and other criteria, including, in particular, low income, unemployment of parents / guardians, belonging to a single, large, three-child or orphan family , or the existence of special learning difficulties.
For the distribution of the devices in the school units, social criteria are taken into account, starting from areas with low GDP per capita, inaccessible, schools of special education and training, vocational training, etc., as well as the educational level. The exact number of devices per school is determined based on the student population and existing equipment of the school units. The Ministry has ensured that all schools in the country receive mobile devices.
