Former police officer Derek Sauvin, charged with the murder of African American George Floyd, was released from prison today on a $ 1 million bond.
Sauvin is charged with second- and third-degree murder and wrongful death in Floyd’s May 25 death in Minneapolis. The case unleashed a wave of mobilizations across the United States against police violence and racism.
The court established a condition for his unconditional release with a bond of 1.25 million. He paid 1 million, which means he was put on probation, which includes a ban on working in law enforcement agencies and coming into contact with Floyd’s family. You will also need to turn in any firearm licenses you have.
The 44-year-old former police officer will stand trial in March along with three other former colleagues charged with complicity in Floyd’s death, in which Sauvin had been kneeling on his neck for nearly nine minutes.
