HRW, citing a source close to the royal family, said Saturday that the prince was arrested by the security forces on March 27 while in solitary confinement due to the coronation pandemic in a family complex northeast of the capital, Riyadh.

In 2017, the prominent member of the royal family was again arrested and held at a luxury hotel in Riyadh, in an attempt to combat corruption among the upper levels of the kingdom’s bureaucracy. Prince Faisal, a former head of the Saudi Red Crescent, was released that year.

According to Al Jazeera, there were no immediate comments from Saudi officials about the HRW report.

In early March, the mighty prince of Saudi Arabia Mohammed bin Salman one had started extensive crackdown on members of the royal family and security officersAccording to various reports, observers viewed it as the last attempt by the heir to the throne and the de facto governor to consolidate power in the kingdom.

Two of the most influential members of the royal family, or Prince Ahmed bin AbdulazizKing Salman’s younger brother and Mohammed bin Nagef, a prince and former interior minister, were also attacked.

It was not immediately clear whether Prince Faisal’s arrest was related to those in early March.

“Now we must add Prince Faisal to the hundreds detained in Saudi Arabia without a clear legal basis,” said Michael Page, HRW deputy director for the Middle East. The whereabouts or condition of Prince Faisal is unknown.

“The source said that Prince Faisal had not publicly criticized the authorities since his arrest in December 2017 and that his family members were concerned about his health because he had a heart condition,” he added.

“The arrest and possible disappearance of Prince Faisal demonstrate once again the flagrant respect by the Saudi authorities for the rule of law and the need for a complete overhaul of the judiciary,” Page said.

In late December 2017, a senior Saudi official said that Prince Faisal and another king, Prince Meshaal bin Abdullah, had been released from the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Riyadh after reaching a Unknown financial agreement with the government.

The Kingdom regularly denies allegations of unfair detention. Authorities said last year that the government had ended its anti-corruption campaign, targeting many kings, businessmen and government officials, but that it would continue to pursue corruption.
