Samos: Rich aftershock activity: scientists wait until 6 Richter

Thirty aftershocks have been recorded on Samos after the deadly 6.7 magnitude earthquake, according to the Geodynamic Institute.

Post-earthquake activity is considered normal and scientists expect even larger aftershocks in the next few hours.

Seismologists claim to be sure that the earthquake that shook the entire country and Turkey was the main one but they remain on alert.

“It had a very small focal depth of 10 kilometers and this worries me because we will definitely have a very rich aftershock sequence with very large aftershocks,” said Akis Tselentis, director of the Geodynamic Institute of Athens.

We are talking about an earthquake of the order of 7, one of the biggest earthquakes we have experienced in recent years in Greece. However, it is practically impossible that an earthquake of the order of 7 does not have a rich sequence with significant aftershocks that can reach a magnitude of 6 ”, says seismologist Costas Papazachos.

In the same climate, Vassilis Karakostas, professor of seismology at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, stated: “It is not necessary that all strong earthquakes have the same sequence. I think this will clear up after a day or two. “

At the same time, they emphasize that the damage that was substantially limited to ancient buildings shows that the buildings on Samos were saved thanks to their seismic shielding.

“However, our attention should be focused on aftershocks that we could have a magnitude 6-6.2 earthquake that may cause some additional damage to buildings that have already been damaged,” said Efthymios Lekkas, OASP president.

Lekkas: Earthquakes up to 6 Richter are likely to occur

According to Mr. Lekkas, “residents should not be afraid.” There is no need to panic and fear, “OASP president, Geology professor Efthymios Lekkas told MEGA, adding that they should not be under the facades of buildings, not being near the port and in old houses, “said Mr. Lekkas.

The professor emphasized that it is an extreme case to have a larger replica, however there is a strong case that the replicas that will come will be of the order of 6 Richter.

“Residents must also follow the instructions of the pandemic.” I don’t think there will be a bigger tsunami, “he said.

He concluded by saying that Samos held out because, as he said, the country’s seismic shield is high.

Tselentis: The seismic sequence is rich

Seismology professor Akis Tselentis spoke about the rich and strong post-seismic activity in the coming weeks, emphasizing that the 6.7 magnitude earthquake that occurred just before 2 pm in Samos, is the main earthquake.

According to Mr. Tselentis, the earthquake came from a known fault and had a small focal depth.

Mr. Tselentis warned that several strong aftershocks are expected, drawing the attention of citizens. He even asked residents to stay away from old buildings so as not to injure or trap people in a new earthquake.

The professor pointed out that according to his first information, the earthquake disasters in Izmir are terrible.
