Samos is seriously injured by the deadly 6.7 Richter earthquake, which caused severe damage and was felt in almost all of Greece. Two high school students, a boy and a girl, aged 15 and 17, lost their lives when they were crushed by a wall that collapsed in Vathi.
The firefighters’ effort to free the children was superhuman. Residents of the small strait of the city of Samos, near the port, watched and prayed that the two children would get out alive. While the operation was underway, another strong earthquake shook the country.

According to official figures, 19 people were injured. The buildings have collapsed and there are serious problems in the road network.
The Civil Protection and EMAK team headed by Deputy Minister for Civil Protection and Crisis Management, Nikos Hardalias, rushed to Samos by helicopter.
The damage to Karlovasi and Vathi is great. It all started when nine minutes before 2 in the afternoon the earthquake that violently shook the eastern Aegean Sea spread panic among the inhabitants of Samos, who left their homes in fear. Old buildings collapsed in the city of Samos and Ano Vathi, the road network in many places was cut off in two of the landslides, 11 people were transported with fractures to the hospital.
The epicenter was located 19 kilometers northwest of Samos and its focal depth was only 10 kilometers.
A cloud of dust enveloped the island, while debris tiles and dirt overwhelmed the cars. The narrow roads in Ano Vathi were impassable, the facades of the buildings could not stand and collapsed.
The Agia Anna church in the country is among the buildings that could not stand and the community office located in a listed building in Ano Vathi is ready to fall.
With two messages via 112, the General Secretariat of Civil Protection called on residents to take self-protection measures and move away from the coasts.
The mini tsunami wiped out everything on its way to the port in the country of Samos, cars began to float, water rushed towards the stores. Building collapses also occurred in western Samos. The magnitude of 6.7 shook Ikaria, Chios, Patmos, Kos, Kalymnos, Fourni, Agathonisi, and even Crete. In Chios, damage has been reported to the Kokkalio maternity hospital and old buildings, while in Ikaria, landslides have created problems on the road network.
The earthquake was felt throughout Greece, but also in Turkey, Albania and Bulgaria.
