A rocket was launched into the sky on Friday (10/16) off Turkey’s Black Sea coast, where the Turkish armed forces were expected to test Russian-made S-400 defense systems, according to a local video posted.
The video, taken in the coastal city of Sinope, shows a narrow plume of smoke rising into the blue sky.
In recent days, Turkey has published announcements restricting the use of airspace and water off the coast to allow test launches.
If the S-400s are verified, there could be tensions between Turkey and the United States, which strongly opposes Moscow’s Ankara arms market because the United States believes it endangers common NATO defense systems.
The Turkish Defense Ministry said it would not deny or confirm that missile tests had been carried out.
Washington had reacted last year by suspending Turkey’s participation in the F-35 fighter jet program and has threatened sanctions.
Defense analyst Turan Oguz said a preliminary estimate of the color, intensity, angle and direction of the smoke in the video indicated that it was likely S-400 missiles. The angle of the smoke column indicates that the target “should not be too high,” he added.
