The Russian embassy in Athens, in a post on its official Facebook page, publishes a statement from the spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, on Moscow’s position on the territories.
Specifically, it states:
“Russia has signed the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and its position is based on the international legal standards contained in this document. In particular, Article 3 of the Convention establishes that each State has the right to determine the extent of its territorial waters up to a limit that does not exceed 12 nautical miles, measured by baselines determined in accordance with this Convention. However, in some cases, countries, for one reason or another, define a narrower territorial sea. on the assumption that in this matter states are guided by common sense and take into account the geographical peculiarities of a region. In cases where a territorial sea must be demarcated between neighboring states, this issue must be addressed in accordance with international law .
The leadership of the Hellenic Republic is well aware of Russia’s views on this issue.
When it comes to situations where Russian interests are directly affected, we will deal with it on a case-by-case basis. However, so far we don’t see any reason for this. “
