Romanian Liberal Prime Minister Ludovic Orban announced his resignation tonight, just one day after his defeat in the parliamentary elections.
“I have decided to resign today,” he said in a televised statement at the end of a conversation with the head of state, Klaus Johannes.
“My resignation has a specific purpose: to allow the start of negotiations for the formation of the future government,” Orban added.
The pro-European liberals, who came second with 25% of the vote, behind the Social Democrats (30%), are expected to remain in power by allying themselves with smaller parties.
Orban’s departure could greatly facilitate negotiations with the reformers of a new center-right alliance, USR-Plus, who wanted to appoint a “credible figure” to the post that would bring “fresh air.”
Orban, 57, was appointed prime minister in November 2019, following a vote of no confidence that toppled the Social Democratic government.
According to the media, the president allegedly attributed to him today the poor performance in the parliamentary elections and the mismanagement of the pandemic.
The president will appoint an interim prime minister soon, pending the outcome of negotiations to form a new coalition.
President Johannes, who is in favor of forming a government around a center-right coalition, will ask political parties to start consultations in the coming days.
The Social Democrats (PSD), for their part, ruled, through their vice president Sorin Grideanou, that they have the right to inherit the post of prime minister in light of the electoral results.
But calculations show that this party, deprived of allies, will not be able to form a coalition in Parliament.
