Road Race to Bring Masks to Schools: How to Go Back to School

[ad_1]

With the start of the school year just over 48 hours away, shortly before the first bell an alarm sounded for students, parents, teachers and the direction of the Ministry of Education. In addition to the first cases of teachers and students, the alalum created by the provision of free masks by the state in schools creates a headache.

The government and the local government are involved in a street race after the cancellation of three procurement tenders carried out by the Court of Accounts for formal reasons in the files they had submitted.

The main cause of the problem is the fact that four of the contractors submitted inadequate samples and were therefore excluded from the process. However, this happened at the last minute and now managers are racing to fill a gap of at least 250,000 masks.

A typical example is Thessaloniki, where 20,000 masks intended for schools were deemed inappropriate because they did not meet specifications and therefore could not end up in the hands of students and teachers. However, according to a report by MEGA, these masks have already been replaced, while books, antiseptics and masks have already been distributed in all school complexes in the co-capital.

It is noted that today it was known that the objective now is to have a mask for each student and each teacher in the schools on Monday, while from next week the second batch of masks will be ready for the students.

Masks for two days

In some cases, such as Samos and Chios, mayors supplied their schools with disposable masks from their stock.

In Patras, anxiety has reached its peak as even today no trace of a mask has arrived.

In Crete, so far only Lassithi prefecture has been supplied with supplies, while if all goes well, the shipment with the masks for Heraklion, Chania and Rethymno will arrive at dawn on Sunday. And in Attica it is not clear if the masks will arrive in time.

In the earlier days, according to KEDE, the small islands and the eastern Macedonian region, Thrace, received masks. The situation is better in northern Greece. Yesterday and today trucks with masks for the schools of the city and neighboring municipalities arrived in Thessaloniki.

The weekend is expected to be hot as the success or otherwise of the distribution of the masks will be judged literally in seconds.

KEDE President at MEGA: A school will not open without masks

Speaking to MEGA and Katerina Panagopoulou’s main newsletter, Dimitris Papastergiou, president of KEDE, said there is a race on the way for the masks to reach all schools on Monday.

“We are increasingly confident that we will be able to distribute the masks throughout Greece before noon on Sunday.”

Mr. Papastergiou pointed out that the problems that arose were due to the quality controls of the masks.

The president of KEDE stressed that no school will open without masks on Monday

“The purpose of KEDE is to exhaust all margins,” he characteristically said.

Where there are problems about 56 hours before the first bell rings

As the president of KEDE mentioned previously, speaking with in.gr, the problems are due to the fact that on the one hand there is a problem in production, which is not enough for such a large demand and on the other hand the cancellations and minor problems of the last hour intensify anxiety about whether the masks (that is, the one that will correspond to him per student) will be delivered on time mainly in Attica.

According to Mr. Papastergiou, two trucks transporting school masks to Greece are currently blocked at the border with Bulgaria.

In any case, it is estimated that the masks will be distributed over the weekend in Attica, while a competition for 1,600,000 masks has been held so far, with another expected to be held next week.

However, another Region that will fight for everything to be ready for Monday is Thessaly. The competent bodies are expected to press there, while it seems that everything is ready in Crete, the Peloponnese, Epirus and Central Macedonia.
