Now there are thousands deer on the island of Rhodes, while a few years ago their number was minimal. According to estimates, the number of deer that live in the forest areas of the island exceeds 5,000.
A relevant initiative has been taken by the South Aegean region in order to have a plan for its management, since Overcrowding also causes problems on the island, mainly in terms of crops.
“The solution to the problem is the development of a local management plan that will be drawn up by the Rhodes Forest Service, which is already dealing with this issue” The regional deputy director of the Primary Sector Filimonas Zannetidis told APE-MPE, pointing out that there is indeed a problem with the increase in the deer population on the island. We also have many traffic accidents and extensive damage to crops, emphasizes Mr. Zannetidis, noting that solutions must be launched immediately.
the rhodes deer belonging to protected species of deer Plato or Dama-dama which is intertwined with the island of Rhodes, as it is an integral part of its natural wealth and domestic fauna. Platoni is found exclusively on Rhodes and is now inextricably linked to the island’s cultural heritage, as its presence in this area dates back thousands of years and according to experts, it has not been mixed with other species since ancient times. until today. However, in recent years there has been a fairly large increase in the deer population on the island. In fact, it is estimated that from two hundred, which was its minimum number a few years ago, today it has reached thousands.
The increase in population, in combination with the limitation of its natural space, for the firesdrought and lack of food often results in a “massive decline” of animals from forest areas to Rhodes residential areas, as this species is quite familiar to humans. Unfortunately, the phenomenon of the presence of herds of deer in residential areas has significant effects on the daily life of the island and its citizens. In particular, there have been a multitude of traffic accidents, involving deer, many of them serious, while the damage caused to public and private property (fences, etc.) is also significant. The main problem, however, is faced by the primary sector, as deer cause irreparable damage to agriculture, whose restoration generates enormous costs for local farmers. In fact, seeing farmers repeatedly destroy their crops due to free deer grazing, they are even forced to abandon their crops. The effects of the increased numbers of deer in Rhodes, and the damage caused by their struggle for survival, have been repeatedly raised in public debate and are one of the dominant themes of the island’s agricultural institutions.
The issue has already been raised in recent years in the Ministry of Rural Development by representatives of local agencies that, among other things, are calling for legislation so that farmers whose crops are destroyed by deer can be compensated.
Especially in the central Rhodes area and in South Rhodes, the number of deer has increased significantly in recent years with similar consequences.
