In the first days of December, as everything shows, the procedures for lifting the confinement in our country will begin, with the beginning, as expected, carried out by the schools.

According to information provided by MEGA, the government has on the table the plan to open schools of all levels on December 7.

Of course, as always, the plan will be implemented, as long as there are no dramatic disruptions in the next 2-3 days.

The school closings were part of a general closure effort across the country, with epidemiologists calling for schools to be closed to reduce mobility around schools, as dispersion within school buildings remains very low.

The schools are expected to be open when they close for the Christmas break, which has yet to be announced.

In addition, according to the MEGA report, thousands of tests are expected to be carried out on a regular basis in schools, so that it can be seen every day what the viral load may be there.

The announcements were made by Mitsotakis

Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to announce the opening of the schools with his sermon, likely on Friday, during which he will also announce the extension of the closure by one or two weeks.

The next two 24 hours are crucial

Government officials consider the next two days, Tuesday and Wednesday, the most critical days of the entire pandemic in Greece since the beginning of the crisis.

The reason is that the epidemiological indicators that will be seen in those days are also those that will judge what will happen in the course, such as the opening of schools but also commerce and restaurants.

The “key” date for the restaurant opening

Finally, according to the MEGA report, the opening of the restaurant is expected to occur a few days before Christmas.

In particular, the government plans to allow restaurants to open on December 21.

The reason this day was chosen is that the government does not want to open the restaurants on the weekend, where it would probably be much more crowded.

Evaluations of infectious disease specialists

Infectious disease pediatrician, member of the Health Ministry’s expert committee, Athanasia Lourida, was also pessimistic about the opening of schools in the coming weeks.

According to her, if the current epidemiological data continues, schools will not open even if children do not transmit the disease or take it so seriously. However, transporting adults to transport children to school helps spread the virus in the community.

“Things are not good at the moment,” Ms. Lourida said, emphasizing that the final decisions are made by the political leadership.

The schools will likely be one of the first to open, government spokesman Stelios Petsas said during a briefing for political authors. He reiterated that there was no over-transmission in schools, emphasizing that with the tests that will be carried out we want to examine the epidemiological burden.

Regarding the possibility of a third wave, Ms Lourida, speaking on THEMA 104.6, said that it is still too early to discuss such a thing.

“We have to study the virus day by day, it has surprised scientists around the world,” commented the doctor, noting that the flows from the northern border played an important role in the spread of the virus in Thessaloniki.

The characteristic of the situation is that in two samples of coronavirus that are sent to the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, one comes out positive, Ms Lourida emphasized.

Kerameans: Opening schools in three stages

As the Minister of Education, Niki Kerameos, had said, on Saturday the country’s school units will open in three stages, as soon as the development of the pandemic and the suggestions of experts allow.

“Our objective and priority is to open schools and there is the possibility of opening primary schools first and then gymnasiums and high schools”, adding however that the time in which the schools will reopen depends on specialists in infectious diseases .

The Minister of Education also stated that there is nothing that can replace lifelong learning, but as long as experts tell us that schools must be closed, e-learning is mandatory.
