Hellenic Prosecutors Association: the risk has been maximized with the full functioning of criminal courts in particular
At the same time Hellenic Association of Prosecutors (EUSR) in a letter to the Ministers of Health and Justice declares that “The practice of fully functioning criminal courts in the country, especially in the midst of a pandemic, did not produce the desired result, that is, avoiding the slowdown in the administration of justice and maximizing the risk of spreading the COVID-19 virus to employees. of the courts and the public.».
The letter was also sent to the president of EODY, while it was also mobilized at the top of the Supreme Court.
In the letter, the Prosecutors’ Union states the following:
“Following our letters of 11/1/2020, we would like to inform you of the results of the three-week full operation of the country’s courts, amid tough measures to address the pandemic, such as restricting the circulation of citizens.
Courts across the country have been functioning normally in recent weeks, with a large influx of workers and the public, who were not fully disciplined at the instructions of the relevant ministries, often resulting in overcrowding.
Contrary to expectations, few trials were held, especially in criminal courts, where most of the parties requested and received a postponement of the trial, for reasons related to the problem of the pandemic.
Subsequently, it was found that the practice of fully functioning, especially of the country’s criminal courts in the midst of a pandemic, did not yield the desired result, that is, avoiding slowing down the administration of justice and maximizing the risk of the spread of the COVID-19 virus. to judicial personnel and the public. ».
