Turkish prosecutor today proposes “aggravated” life imprisonment against businessman and activist Osman kavala, who has been detained for almost three years.
A new accusation against him for “trying to overthrow the government” for his alleged participation in the failed 2016 coup and for “political espionage” was made public today by Istanbul Prosecutor’s Office.
The American researcher Henry Barkley it also faces the same categories. Kavala describes himself as “his local collaborator” in the indictment.
Barkley, who has visited Turkey many times, is now a professor at American Lehigh University in Pennsylvania.
Three life sentences “with aggravating circumstances”, including stricter conditions of detention, the prosecutor asks Kavalas and Barclays for their alleged involvement in the 2016 coup attempt, and 20 years in prison for “espionage.”
The 62-year-old businessman and philanthropist who hasn’t even been convicted in prison since November 2017 originally accused of attempt to overthrow the government supporting protests by environmentalists against the renovation of Gezi Park in Istanbul in 2013. A court acquitted him in February. However he was arrested again the same day, a few hours after his acquittal, as part of a separate investigation into espionage, which according to the Turkish authorities is related to the failed coup against the Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan in 2016.
An important figure in Turkish civil society, Kavala is known for supporting cultural programs in favor of a dialogue for peace, primarily on the issues of minority rights, Kurdish and Armenian-Turkish reconciliation. Erdogan accuses him of “seeking to destabilize Turkey”.
Ilkan Koyuncu’s lawyer said in July that “there was no evidence” to support the charges against his client.
