The British Association of Poultry Farmers today called on the government to waive quarantine measures to address COVID-19 foreign seasonal workers, noting that otherwise Brits will celebrate Christmas without turkey on their plates.
The proposed exception affects at least 1,000 seasonal workers from Poland, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. This is because there is a shortage of skilled workers for slaughtering and handling poultry in Britain, according to the British Poultry Council. “It is impossible to train British workers in the limited time that remains,” the poultry farmers said.
If the gap is not filled, “the effects on production and therefore on the price” of turkey will be significant. And that means some people won’t be able to buy food for Christmas dinner, said BPC CEO Richard Griffiths.
Every year for Christmas they are sold 9 million British turkeys But poultry farmers face special difficulties this year, due to the pandemic and the prohibition of meetings between people who do not belong to the same household. If this measure is maintained until Christmas, the demand may be reduced, since the British will not be able to organize dinners with the participation of many guests.
