THE Portugal will welcome next week two groups of doctors, aid sent to the country by France and Luxembourg in order to help hospitals that have reached their limits due to the large number of patients with Covid-19 disease, the government announced.
The Ministry of Health accepted the offer of assistance from the governments of Luxembourg and France, with the aim of supporting the intensive care units of the hospitals under the greatest pressure.
A French doctor and three nurses will be sent to a hospital in Almada, a suburb south of Lisbon.
The Luxembourg team, made up of two doctors and two nurses, will assist Evora Hospital in the southeast, the Health Ministry said. The two teams are expected to be in Portugal next week and will stay for 15 days.
Portugal has been since January the country most affected by the pandemic worldwide, in proportion to its population.
It has already received aid from Germany, which sent a team of 26 military doctors and nurses working in an eight-bed intensive care unit in a private hospital in Lisbon.
Austria and the Galicia region in neighboring Spain have offered to pick up some patients to relieve local hospitals, but transporting them abroad remains the last resort.
