US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has called for a “reduction of tensions” in the eastern Mediterranean.

The head of US diplomacy today called on Greece and Turkey to “reduce tensions” to stop the escalation in the eastern Mediterranean.

“We call on everyone to take a step to ease tensions and initiate diplomatic talks on the conflicts in the eastern Mediterranean,” he told a news conference.

Regarding the partial lifting of the embargo on arms sales in Cyprus, Pompeo said:

“We know that this decision was announced as tensions increased in the eastern Mediterranean, but we thought it was the right thing to do and I decided to go further,” the US diplomat said today.

Regarding US President Donald Trump’s conversation with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, as well as Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Pompeo said:

“They need to sit down together and start conversations about all this and find diplomatic solutions. It is useless to increase military tensions in the region, this can only lead to negative things,” Pompeo insisted.
