In Thessaloniki is the Secretary of State of the United States, Mike Pompeo, who arrived at the airport in “Macedonia” shortly after midnight and this morning will meet with his Greek counterpart, Nikos Dendias.
At the center of the meeting, as already announced by the Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs, there will be issues of bilateral, regional and international interest, with emphasis on the Greece-United States Strategic Dialogue, cooperation in defense and energy and developments in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
In a tweet shortly before his departure from Washington yesterday, Pompeo, who is the first US Secretary of State to visit Thessaloniki, said: “On the way back to Europe to strengthen our strong bilateral relations and the importance of a Sustained regional cooperation. During his visit to Thessaloniki, the Secretary of State of the United States will also participate in a round table on energy, at the EVS, in the presence of the Minister of Environment and Energy, Kostis Hatzidakis, and then a scientific and technological cooperation agreement will be signed . between Greece and the United States, in the presence of the Minister of Development and Investment, Adonis Georgiadis.
The visit of the head of American diplomacy, who is accompanied by his wife, Susan, will end with his visit to the Jewish Museum in Thessaloniki.
After Thessaloniki, the US Secretary of State will travel to Crete, where he will visit the Souda Naval Base to underscore America’s strong security partnership with Greece.
The visit of the US Secretary of State to Greece highlights the central importance to the strategic relationship between Greece and the United States the field of security and defense but also the fundamental position of Greece as a pillar of stability between the western Balkans and the eastern Mediterranean.
On his second visit to Greece in less than a year, Pompeo avoids Athens and instead visits the co-capital and base of Souda.
It is observed that the publicity given to the visit of the State Department and, mainly, the emphasis on Mr. Pompeo’s visit to Souda, is not accidental, since the United States wants to deepen relations in the defense field something that is allowed by the new revised Mutual Defense Cooperation Agreement (MDCA) approved last year.
