The police forces blocked the AUTh, but then withdrew. Professors, deputies, and students rushed to the scene. Five arrests were made.

In a dynamic intervention in the Rectorate of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the police forces proceeded, on Monday night.

Specifically, shortly before 9:00 pm, a police cage and a MAT squad blocked the entrance to the Rector’s Office at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. At the same time, the police blocked the entrances to the University. However, around 10:30 p.m., the police forces left Ethnikis Aminis Street, where the AUTh entrance is located, and the road was reopened to traffic.

It is noted that when the police forces left, professors from the institution and dozens of students had gathered inside and outside the University. Among other things, members of the Senate and other professors from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, as well as some 50 students, rushed out of the Rectorate (which is under occupation). In addition, the SYRIZA deputies (K. Notopoulou, Dora Avgeri, Giannis Amanatidis) went to the courtyard of the Rectory.

What preceded

According to the testimonies of the students, in the wider area of the university, the police forces carried out a persecution of students, who did not participate in the occupation. According to the information, five arrests were made: they were people who were on campus and walking.

It is recalled that within the Rectory there are a sufficient number of students (about 80) who participate in the occupation.

In any case, there is a large police climate in Thessaloniki. In addition to the AUTh, the police forces came out of the Theater Department, which is located outside the university campus on Egnatia Street and which is also under occupation.

Below is a video with statements from students participating in the occupation (source: infolibre):

Announcement of AUTh teachers

We, the undersigned, appeal to the collective bodies of AUTh. (Senate, ESDEP, Employees Association, Student Associations) to take the initiative to convene tomorrow morning a joint assembly in front of the Administration building, in order to examine the problem facing our University due to the prolonged occupation, with the consequent suspension of the administrative and its financial functions.

We express our disagreement with the recent law, which we consider responsible for unleashing student mobilizations, at a time when the country faces the pandemic. We declare that we oppose any new police operation within the University, which will irreparably damage its prestige. We believe, on the contrary, that in these critical hours it is possible to solve the problem through academic means.

Mavroskoufis Dimitris, Zarotiadis Grigoris, Michailidis Athanasios, Konstantinidis Damianos, Aris Stylianou.

Statement by Christos Spirtzis

(Responsible for Citizen Protection of SYRIZA-PS)

Before Alector cries…. The auras that were gradually transferred from Athens to Thessaloniki, with the body of the praetorian Mitsotakis, Chrysochoidis, are operating at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, to confront the occupation of students against the Chrysochoidis-Keramean law.
After Nea Smyrni, at AUTh again the focus on the youth of our country.

The praetorian bodies of Messrs. Mitsotaki Chrysochoidis have excluded all schools in Thessaloniki, even those that are off the University campus.
We reiterate that Mr. Chrysochoidis participated today in Thessaloniki in a meeting whose exact subject no one knows.

The mystery was recently solved. Distraction with an attack on the AUTh and an operation of terror, repression and a manifestation of supposedly general disorder in our youth.

At a time when hundreds of our fellow citizens due to insufficient government policy to deal with the health crisis cannot find an ICU bed in Athens,
At a time when we are the only European country with a five-month lockdown for the third wave, with increasing results,
At a time when our economy was returned to a deep recession, with incredible consequences for Greek society,
At a time when national problems are at a critical juncture,

Messrs. Mitsotakis and Chrysochoidis play their own violin.
Fatal and incapable of facing the serious problems of Greek society, they terrify.
We call on the government to stop planning for distractions and to constantly invest in artificial escalation and a climate of division, so that it does not hide its dead ends in the pandemic and the economy.
We ask you to abandon the slippery slope of society and the undemocratic descent of violence.

Comment from the regional organization AEI Thes / niki of KNE

by the siege of the AUTh by police forces

The siege of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki by a large number of police forces to evacuate the occupation of the rectory carried out by student associations is unacceptable. The police don’t have a job at the universities! Universities belong to students and their needs.

We students have fair demands: to open our schools now with all the necessary protection measures, to become students again, not to apply an unjust law.

The government is investing in repression and terrorism to silence the organized student movement. But we students have already shown that repression not only does not scare us, it strengthens our struggle.

Immediately withdraw all police forces around the AUTH!
