The teacher, who was beheaded by an 18-year-old Chechen man in Paris, had received threats before the attack, for controversial sketches of Muhammad that he had shown to his students, according to French media.
So far, nine people have been arrested, including the parents of a child from the school where the teacher worked and a minor, according to judicial sources.
The 18-year-old perpetrator was shot and killed by police near the murder site on Friday. Today a relevant video was released from the moment it was neutralized by the police.
The murder took place while a trial was underway in Paris for a 2015 Islamist attack on the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo for publishing sketches of Muhammad.
French President Emmanuel Macron said the attack had all the hallmarks of an “Islamic terrorist attack” and that the teacher had been killed for “teaching freedom of expression.”
Speaking from the scene a few hours after the incident, he emphasized national unity. “They will not prevail, they will not separate us,” he said.
The attacker struck shortly after 5 p.m. local time near a secondary school in the town of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, about 30 miles (30 km) northwest of central Paris.
The 18-year-old perpetrator with a large knife in his hand attacked the teacher in the street and cut off his head. Witnesses say they heard him shout “Allahu Akbar”.
After the attack, the perpetrator fled, but local police quickly found themselves in the area neutralizing 18-year-old Checheno.
Police identified the victim as Samuel Paty, 47, a history and geography teacher who had given free speech lessons earlier at the school.
It is said that he showed the animations of the Prophet Muhammad while speaking of the Charlie Hebdo case and reportedly advised Muslim students to leave the room if they thought they might be offended.
Some Muslim parents complained at the school and French media reported that the teacher had received unspecified threats after the class.
The father of a 13-year-old girl who did not leave the classroom posted a video on YouTube saying that the teacher had shown a “photo of a naked man” claiming to be a “Muslim prophet.”
The father called other parents for class action against the teacher, whom he described as a “voyou” (criminal).
To alleviate the situation, the school organized a meeting between the principal, the teacher, and an official from the educational authority.
“According to my son, he was very good, super kind, super polite,” a school father told AFP.
Charlie Hebdo magazine commented on the attack, writing on Twitter: “Intolerance has just reached a new threshold and does not seem to stop at anything, in order to impose terror in our country.”
