Opening of schools: the evaluations of the specialists in infectious diseases and the plan of the Ministry of Education

Infectious disease pediatrician, member of the Health Ministry’s expert committee, Athanasia Lourida, was pessimistic about the opening of schools in the coming weeks.

According to her, if the current epidemiological data continues, schools will not open even if children do not transmit the disease or take it so seriously. However, transporting adults to transport children to school helps spread the virus in the community.

“Things are not good at the moment,” Ms. Lourida said, emphasizing that the final decisions are made by the political leadership.

The schools will likely be one of the first to open, government spokesman Stelios Petsas said during a briefing for political authors. He reiterated that there was no over-transmission in schools, emphasizing that with the tests that will be carried out we want to examine the epidemiological burden.

Regarding the possibility of a third wave, Ms Lourida, speaking on THEMA 104.6, said that it is still too early to discuss such a thing.

“We have to study the virus day by day, it has surprised scientists around the world,” commented the doctor, noting that the flows from the northern border played an important role in the spread of the virus in Thessaloniki.

The characteristic of the situation is that in two samples of coronavirus that are sent to the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, one comes out positive, Ms Lourida emphasized.

Kerameans: Opening schools in three stages

As revealed this Saturday by the Minister of Education Niki Kerameos, the country’s school units will open in three stages, as soon as the evolution of the pandemic and the suggestions of experts allow it.

“Our objective and priority is to open schools and there is the possibility of opening primary schools first and then gymnasiums and high schools”, adding however that the time in which the schools will reopen depends on specialists in infectious diseases .

The Minister of Education also stated that there is nothing that can replace lifelong learning, but as long as experts tell us that schools must be closed, e-learning is mandatory.
