The fighter on the left, Nikos Belogiannis, son of the “carnation man” Nikos Belogianis, died.
Nikos Belogiannis died at the age of 68 in the People’s Hospital after 10 days of hospitalization.
He was a chemical engineer, son of the ideologue and leftist militant Nikos Belogiannis, executed in 1952 in Goudi, and of Elli Pappas, journalist and writer, also nephew of the emblematic Didos Sotiriou.
Besides being a chemical engineer, he was also a writer, having written, among other things, the books “Stalinism: the fourth monotheistic religion” and “This is how Alexander’s news is” with snapshots of the “era of the Memorandum.”
Nikos Belogiannis had an important role in the protection of archaeological heritage and the preservation of monuments, through the work he offered as head of the Stone Center of the Ministry of Culture.
He was born in prison in 1951. A year later, his father, “The Man with the Carnation”, Nikos Belogiannis, was executed, while his mother, Elli Pappas, was released from prison in 1964. He grew up with his aunt, D. Sotiriou.
Words of the same
Life with Dido Sotiriou
We lived in an old 1937 apartment building on Codrington Street; donated it to the Society of Writers which is located there. I remember a sunny and airy house and Dido, who was not only a hypochondriac to herself, was overprotective with me. She also had the Party on top of her to see if she was raising me “properly”. She loved me for a long time and then she was always with me, in meetings and party processes. It was there that I realized how illiterate many party officials were, who never liked the intellectuals; Within the party, the term “intellectual” was often used as a category, spiritual and educated people were always suspected of leaning towards the bourgeoisie.
Student during the meeting period
It was a black darkness. The universities are full of hustle and bustle – some were policemen, others were more “secret”, students hired by Security, of course we knew who they were. But there were fermentations, oppositional, revolutionary, beginning with the 71 attempt to dismantle the student councils appointed by the board and to hold free elections in the universities. In all the Schools in the elections of 72 it was manipulated, except ours and the Architects; For us Professor Nikos Koumoutsos, an honest and democratic man, sat like a cerberus diaper from the polls and stopped the brownies from doing their thing. . In the rest, the hafiedes emptied the ballot boxes in the cold and exchanged the ballots. He paid for this attitude with imprisonment at EAT-ESA… By ’73 we had acquired connections with executives of the anti-dictatorship “Riga Fereou”, I was fed up with politics and these anti-dictatorship fermentations whetted my appetite. I remember during this period of the (student) elections when others told me to stay for a while so as not to pressure the board to denounce us as “communists”, I complied, I stayed with them but I did not go out face to face. Instead of a “red cloth”, I became a reporter.
Double funeral
(smiles) No. But I’ll tell you something, since you ask me something like that. I remember that we had organized a double political funeral in Kokkinia, in the Third Cemetery, and of my father and my mother together, because my father and I had been thrown into a well, after three years his mother went, she dug it up and it buried in the grave it is in today, so it was practically never buried. The KKE did not know that we would bury it, along with my mother’s funeral. And they made a signature so that no one pressed! “Elli Pappa is being buried today”, without place, without time, without anything. This suited us very well and we skillfully filtered that she would be buried alongside her partner. At the funeral, then, a crown appears, with a crimson ribbon and gold letters “the central committee of the KKE”, which, however, had white chrysanthemums, a semiology of Stalinism, which Elli, as a revisionist, was not worthy of having red carnations. Since then, on every anniversary of Elli’s death, October 27, I have given her white chrysanthemums. To remind her how naive she was that she didn’t suspect it was a cold party mechanism! And remember it too …
