Greece will once again experience lockdown days to control the second wave of the coronavirus, as Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to announce the new measures in tomorrow’s update.
At 12:00 the Prime Minister will make further announcements from the Palace of the Maxims, in the presence of Professor Sotiris Tsiodras. The new measures come after the triple “black” record announced today: 2,646 cases and 18 deaths in 24 hours, while 179 patients are treated by intubation.
At today’s meeting, experts suggested to Mr. Mitsotakis a new blockade throughout the country, something that was confirmed by the Minister of Health, Vassilis Kikilias, in statements to ANT1. The health minister did not specify when the lockdown will begin and referred to the prime minister’s announcements.
Lock on Thessaloniki standards
The new blockade across the country will be based on the standards of the one already applied in Thessaloniki and Serres, according to information from “Kathimerini”.
The lockdown is expected to take effect Saturday morning, according to the same information. Experts suggested applying it for 30 days, while information from SKAI indicated that the lockdown will likely last three weeks.
As far as schools are concerned, the committee’s suggestion is that only primary schools remain open and secondary schools and lyceums close, according to Mr. Kikilias. Information from SKAI indicates that it is questionable whether high school students will be included in distance education, like high school students.
Based on the information that the new blockade will be based on the measures already in force in Thessaloniki and Serres, this means that travel will be allowed for specific reasons and by sending an SMS to 13033.
From 05:00 to 21:00 it will be allowed to travel – in addition to going to work – for health reasons, buying basic necessities, going to a public service or bank, providing assistance, attending a ceremony, transporting a minor from and toward school, physical activity, or movement with a pet.
For the period from 21:00 to 05:00, it will be allowed to travel only for work, health and personal movement reasons with a pet.
Furthermore, based on the same information, travel outside the peripheral units will be prohibited.
In addition, the lock on Thessaloniki-Serres standards provides for the suspension of the operation of retail (excluding food stores), hairdressers and personal hygiene services. Catering remains suspended and delivery services are allowed.
Likewise, the same measures stipulate that 1 person in addition to the driver is allowed in cars, while in places of worship services are carried out without the presence of believers.
The triple negative record
The previous 24 hours were the worst for our country since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
In 24 hours, 2,646 new cases of coronavirus were detected and another 18 people died. At the same time, the number of intubators reached a record level of 179.
Thessaloniki and Attica continue to register an alarming number of cases. In these two areas alone, 1,411 new infections were detected in 24 hours. Specifically, 823 cases were registered in the peripheral unit of Thessaloniki and 595 in Attica. However, Larissa also registered a triple digit number of infections (111), while another 8 regional units had more than 50 new cases.
“Despite the measures, there is an exponential increase in cases throughout the country.” This is an alarm signal, because it seems that more pressure will be put on the health system, “said government sources, noting that they should be take the necessary measures to stop the pandemic. “We cannot wait for the problem to arrive,” they said.
The situation in the ICU
The pressure on the health system is clearly reflected in the data on the situation in ICUs due to coronavirus, where the occupancy rate is 60%, according to data from sources from the Ministry of Health.
There are currently a total of 1,013 operational ICU beds throughout the country, of which 698 are occupied and 315 vacant (31%). As for the beds in the ICU due to coronavirus, today there are 348, of which 220 are occupied and 128 empty (37%).
