The images that terrified them saw walkers walking on a beach in Nafplio as a greenish-black slimy substance flooded the shoreline on Monday, April 28.
The images of a section of the beach towards Nea Kio in the area’s wetland area really caused concern, as many believed it was a type of contamination from a ship or factory. But what has really happened?
Natural conditions and nutrient levels can lead to abundance of certain types of plankton (hypertrophy). These plankton “bursts” are common to all the world’s oceans and can consist of phytoplankton, zooplankton, or gelatinous zooplankton, depending on environmental conditions.
Outbreaks of the phytoplankton population occur when sunlight and nutrients are available to plants, so they grow and reproduce where they are so dense that their presence changes and the color of the water they live in.
These ‘outbreaks’ can be short-lived (start and end in a few days) or can last up to several weeks. They can also appear on a relatively small scale or cover hundreds of square kilometers of ocean surface.
