Hellish night in Mytilene. The Moria camp has been almost completely burned, after a fire that broke out on the night of Tuesday (9/8), while a large number of refugees and migrants have fled to the surrounding mountains. Many are also heading to the city.
The reason was the announcement that 35 people tested positive for the coronavirus and were isolated along with members of their families. In isolation, according to protocols, they should have been found and their contacts identified.
This would take place in warehouses outside the KYT (Reception and Identification Center) on the road to Panagiouda.
The first reactions
Some of them reacted to the prospect of isolation and refused to leave the field.
Others tried to leave the camp late Tuesday night, moving up the mountain, believing that they would thus escape the danger of the coronavirus caused by contact with those who refused to leave.
The clashes between them soon sparked fires initially around the camp that burned all the tents outside and around the KYT and containers inside.
The structure was evacuated by thousands of migrants
Due to the strong winds, the flames were transported very quickly inside the facilities, which caused the entire area to turn into a great fire, burning everything and especially the containers and tents, where more than 12,000 refugees and migrants lived.
So far, a large number of refugees and immigrants are moving into the city, passing through the town of Moria, while the MAT squads with cages have created a barrier at the height of Kara Tepe, preventing them from entering the city.
Volunteers and staff from the two municipalities of the island are at the site, with strong winds that make the task of extinction difficult.
Immigrants attacked firefighters
As the neighbors complained and the Fire Department itself confirmed, the Fire Brigade forces that rushed to the scene were attacked with stones by immigrants and refugees.

“Mytilene will fall after Moria”
Meanwhile, the Association of Neighbors of Moria, Panagiouda and neighboring Communities in a new post states: “The local NGO “Stand by Me” states that “the existing 13,000 homeless refugees have been burned” cast “the inhabitants of Moria (ss means the camp!) who try to escape are pushed by the locals who attack them“Ει also says:”After Moria, Mytilene will fall Mό Moria ended, Moria was destroyed». »
Earlier, the Association of Residents of Moria, Panagiouda and neighboring communities cited a statement from the Dutch NGO “Movement on the Ground” which states that “The fires are due to the discomfort of migrants with the strict closure decision.»After 35 cases of coronavirus in 2,000 people.
The bells rang
The bells began to ring in the area, as the Moria Residents Association affirms that the fire has several fronts and they estimate that it was started by an arson.
They also said that some migrants did not allow firefighters to approach the area, as they threw stones at the vehicles.
Double fire front in Vatousa and Antissa
Two other fires had broken out earlier in areas of Mytilene.
The Fire Service forces are fighting the flames, operating on two fronts of fire, near Vatousa and Antissa.
According to the first reports, the fires broke out almost simultaneously and the situation is deteriorating due to the very strong winds, which blow in the northeast of the Aegean from noon. Although there was a fire hazard prediction for Wednesday (9/9), the trouble was not long in coming.
One front is near Xirolimni, on the old Vatoussa – Skalochori road, with firefighters operating at the site so as not to threaten the Rhodes Cheese Factory.
However, there is a second front, towards Antissa.
All available Kalloni Fire Brigade vehicles have been activated, while Mytilene’s forces rushed in as well.
