Mitsotakis on the illumination of the Acropolis: “Democracy and the principles of classical Athens need more light today”
Kyriakos Mitsotakis spoke about the illumination of the Acropolis with the symbolism that “The Republic and the principles of classical Athens need more light today” in his speech at the event.
“Twenty-five centuries after the mythical hero’s gift to man took countless forms. Ignite science and discovery by improving our lives. Today he returns to that first route. The ancient flame is transformed into a modern light course. The light of the 21st century embraces the Acropolis. It is a celebration beyond borders and languages. The values that were born in this place are a universal property, “said Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in his greeting at the lighting ceremony of the Acropolis.
“Democracy and the principles of classical Athens need more light today, as some question the regime of the measure and its ability to bring equality and fair participation in the political process. They also demand the emergence of those aspects that lead to the reflection of democratic rules. As is now the case with the new way of knowing the Acropolis. The previous lighting was already 15 years old. Time has worn him out. Technology overcame it.
The change underway today was a conscious political choice. Reintegrate the symbol of classical Greece into everyday life. The practical objective was twofold. On the one hand, highlight the space with its volume and geometry. “On the other hand, the facilities must be modernized, gaining more durability and a smaller energy footprint,” the prime minister characteristically said.

Under the nearly full moon, the Rock, the Walls, the Parthenon, the Propylaea, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechtheus, the Theater of Dionysus, the Stoa of Eumenes and the Dionysian Shrine were illuminated again, while five more monuments gained “shine” for the first time: the Thrasyllos monument, the Columns of the Sponsors, the Asclepieion and the caves of Apollo and Aglavros / Hourglass, as well as the Sanctuary of Aphrodite.
For the first time, the lighting distinguishes the monuments of the Holy Rock both from the walls and between them, highlighting their totality, but also the volume and geometry of each monument from all possible points of view.
The marbles, whiter than ever, reflect every aspect, every geometric shape, every natural material, emphasizing the relief of the decoration of each monument.
The study for the lighting of the Acropolis, carried out by the lighting designer Eleftheria Deko, was not limited to the aesthetic part, but includes the important improvement of the existing infrastructure with the modernization of the electrical installation and the automation and control system of the luminaires.
This is the first of a series of projects carried out by the Ministry of Culture and Sports with the aim of fully improving the infrastructure and services provided by the Acropolis, with a donation and implementation by the Onassis Foundation.
