“There can be no dialogue with the spray guns and trolls spreading false news about the coronavirus,” says LSE professor Elias Mosialos in a post on the occasion of today’s reports from Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

“I am glad that today the Prime Minister referred for the first time in his speech to the people sprayed,” he said, stressing that all responsible citizens must now react to their attacks.

Elías Mosialos’ position in detail

“To this day, all manner of anonymous and sprayed trolls are trying to dominate by circulating fake news and escalating attacks against those who disagree with them. Attacks are often massive, targeted, and pointless monuments.

It is not the first time they have done it, but the previous ones the risk was not our health and that of our fellow citizens.

The confrontation with those who spread false news must be systematic and vigorous. There is no dialogue with the Sprites and the trolls. Dialogue occurs with rational people who propose different approaches and alternative proposals, always in the context of recognizing that we are facing a difficult pandemic.

Spreading false news and systematic and vulgar attacks on scientists is not part of a polyphonic and tolerant society. It is the worst form of obscurantism that threatens our health, our democracy and our institutions.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, I have held a firm stance towards sprayers and trolls. I am glad that today the Prime Minister referred to the sprayed people for the first time in his speech. But we must all react now. All democratic political parties, all citizens. A small minority cannot be systematically intimidated and misinformed.

I know many of you doubt. You write a comment, ten people jump in to spray you, and you feel like you have to respond rationally to our non-rational fellow citizens. It can not be done. Its purpose is not to dialogue. It’s to intimidate you.

But we must not let fear and a small minority dominate. We do not respond politely to rude people. We are relentless on those who bully.

You will be bombarded with provocative messages in your inbox. They know how to do this and they do it well. Because the rest of us are silent. Time to stop this “
