Mosialos: A large increase in coronavirus cases is likely to be announced today

Reports of a new record of coronavirus cases are on the rise today, after yesterday when Greece first recorded 667 new Covid-19 cases in 24 hours.

In a post on Facebook, LSE health policy professor Elias Mosialos noted that an even larger increase is possible today.

Alarm in many areas: upgrade to alarm level

According to the information, Ioannina and Kastoria are likely to rise to red from the orange level of the health alarm, while in the morning the Governor of Central Macedonia Apostolos Tzitzikostas announced the update of Thessaloniki from yellow to orange, warning that the blocking of meters it’s possible.

One step before the next level is Corinth (from yellow to orange), Serres (from green to yellow), while the authorities’ “microscope” has entered Boeotia, which yesterday registered thirty cases.

A common denominator in areas with high prevalence are citizens between the ages of 18 and 39. According to Deputy Minister of Civil Protection Nikos Hardalia and Professor Gika Majorkinis, people with active Covid-19 infection have an average age of 30 in Thessaloniki and 33 in Attica.

“The increase in the epidemic is led by the 18 to 39 age group, at a rate of 60% -70% more than expected. This age group seems to have strengthened by around 10-20% in the last few days, in its participation in the epidemic compared to the previous weeks, ”said Mr. Majorkinis.

Of the other age groups, the 40-64 age group appears to have increased “participation” in the pandemic in the past two months, up to 30% higher than expected.
