Additional measures to deal with the second wave of the coronavirus will be announced in the afternoon at 7:00 p.m. by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who will address Greek citizens, according to the President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou.
According to the information, the new measures on the table refer to the mandatory use of a mask everywhere. in the orange areas and in traffic restriction after midnight (from 00:30) and until dawn again in the orange areas.
The reason is that the authorities believe that the outbreaks of contamination are created after the closure of the restaurants, but also by the parties that are organized. The goal is to stop the spread so that stricter measures and possibly a total lockdown are not needed in the future.
“We are facing a second wave. We continue to do better than the rest of Europe, but that is by no means a consolation. I will have the opportunity in the afternoon to address the citizens, to explain to them where we are and what are the additional measures” said Mr. Mitsotakis to the President of the Republic.
Ms. Sakellaropoulou recalled that when the schools opened she was in Kastelorizo, where she discovered that young students had easily embraced wearing a mask, while sending a message in all directions that the mask is not a restriction of freedom.
The Prime Minister, for his part, stated that: “We have no cases in schools,” a fact that led to strict compliance with the measures, while commented that the use of the mask, although it is a personal safety measure, has a impact on other people and our loved ones. He also said that emphasis should be placed not only on individual responsibility, but on this need to be a model of collective solidarity.
However, he recognized the lack of implementation of the existing measures, saying: “Today we are forced to take additional measures, because we have a few who break the rules while many comply. But unfortunately this reality and we have to face it.
Mr. Mitsotakis, after chairing a teleconference with the regional governors at 12:30 to assess the course of the pandemic and coordinate the measures, will address the citizens in a televised statement in the afternoon, as he usually did at the beginning of the pandemic.
But now the panorama is very different from that of spring, but nevertheless the government is exorcising a general blockade and it is not in its planning. After all, there is an agreement at the EU level that no member state should proceed alone in a new blanket lockdown, but that the economy should stay alive even with … mechanical support. But European countries, which are seeing one after another the growth of the new coronavirus wave, are blocking locally and partially, like France.
The government is focusing on rallies in the squares, but the fact is that the increase in cases is actually attributed to the inability to enforce opening hours at big nightclubs and “hidden” crown parties. Hence the proposal to restrict traffic from midnight to early morning, beyond the mask everywhere. Not all infectious disease experts agree with the latest proposal, but it is a government choice as a last resort to avoid the lockdown.
