The decision not to hold mass events for the anniversary of the Polytechnic is imposed solely for reasons of protection of public health, says Kyriakos Mitsotakis, in a statement on the ban on rallies that has provoked reactions.

The Prime Minister describes as unthinkable “that some install a conflict scenario” and asks the political leaders to take a joint initiative of honor at the Polytechnic, headed by the President of the Republic.

Mr. Mitsotakis in his statement reiterates that this year neither March 25 nor October 28 were held. “But that did not diminish its importance,” he says.

“We are free to choose to limit some of our rights to protect ourselves, those we love and the common good.” Because there can be no freedom without responsibility, “Mr. Mitsotakis also emphasizes.

“The decision not to hold mass demonstrations and marches is imposed solely for reasons of protection of public health.” Yesterday we regretted the loss of 71 of our fellow citizens, “continued the prime minister.

“It is inconceivable, then, that some are setting the stage for a conflict at a time when unity and adherence to the instructions of the experts are required,” he said, referring to the reactions. Live the field of partisan experimentation ”.

The Prime Minister called on all parties to show restraint and political leaders in a joint honorary initiative at the Polytechnic, led by the President of the Republic. “With a simple visit and a flower.” But with great responsibility for the good of the Greeks and the country, “he concludes.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis statement in detail:

The real message of our people’s struggles for freedom and democracy requires, especially in pandemic conditions, honoring our history and the anniversary of the Polytechnic in a different way.

This year we do not celebrate March 25 or October 28. But that did not diminish its importance.

We are free to choose to limit some of our rights to protect ourselves, those we love, and the common good. Because freedom cannot exist without responsibility.

Faced with the danger of the junta, the leaders of the Polytechnic were unarmed. Faced with the danger of death, we are armed with our conscience.

Because it mainly forces us, this year, to celebrate the great anniversary as the protagonists themselves would like: Protect everyone’s health.

I sincerely believe that the vast majority of society is struggling to attend the great debate that is taking place this year in celebration of a pandemic.

The decision not to hold mass demonstrations and marches is imposed solely for reasons of public health protection. Just yesterday we mourned the loss of 71 of our fellow citizens.

It is unthinkable, then, that some establish a scene of conflict when unity and adherence to the instructions of the experts is required. At this critical juncture, the historic anniversary cannot be a cause of division and human lives a field of partisan experimentation.

That is why I ask all parties to show restraint. And the political leaders in a joint initiative of honor at the Polytechnic. Directed by the President of the Republic. With a simple visit and with a flower. But with great responsibility for the good of the Greeks and the country.
