The 80% reduction in the rents of retail and catering companies for the months of January and February, as an additional measure to reduce the economic effects of the new coronavirus pandemic, announced the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis during his speech in the budget parliament.
He announced, in particular, for retail and catering, but also for companies in the field of culture and sports, the reduction of rent by 80% in January and February, with a simultaneous compensation from the state of the owners in 60%. He also mentioned that the fifth cycle of the repayable advance for small and medium-sized enterprises is beginning.
However, Mitsotakis defended the clickable option, estimated that it works well, and at the same time advised all small businesses and stores that they should invest in e-commerce anyway, regardless of the coronavirus.
However, he said: “Because I have a responsibility to listen to the anguish of the market and because I know that many entrepreneurs and restaurants, as well as merchants have invested a lot this Christmas and in consultation with the financial staff, I would like to announce one more today. protection and relief measure for all companies affected by the restrictions. That is, those that will remain closed by order of the state during the holidays, from retail to catering, culture, sports. Rent for January and February is reduced by 80% “.
Sarcastically he commented that this is not an antisocial measure and does not concern big capital, but small and medium-sized ones.
The Prime Minister clarified that 60% of the rents will be compensated to the owners, so that they do not have more losses. The companies will pay only 20% of the rent, he stressed and explained that if someone pays 1,000 euros in rent, they will pay 200 euros in January and February.
At the same time, he announced that the repayable advance of January 5 is advancing. It will have a minimum aid of 1,000 euros for companies, freelancers, scientists, farmers, who present a drop in turnover of 20%.
“Clicking works fine. Anyone who doesn’t go e-commerce will be in a difficult position anyway.”
The Prime Minister stated that he is aware of how difficult the situation in trade is and how painful it is to keep much of the economic activity closed. However, he stressed that this was suggested by experts and compared it with other European countries that are now forced to close for Christmas.
And he defended the click away, which he pointed out that in Greek it is called “external tradition”, indirectly referring to … Babiniotis’ objections to the use of terms in English.
“We will do our best to facilitate retail, to save as much billing as possible and we will not apologize for that,” said the prime minister, asking the opposition: “What alternative do you propose? Should stores open or stay completely closed? ”
He also commented that he heard from the KKE Thanasis Pafilis the argument that clicking favors only large business groups and responded with two arguments. First, he noted that he knows large business groups, which have said they are not prepared to enter this process.
Second, we must realize, ladies and gentlemen in this House, that e-commerce is here to stay and if you think we can go back and if you think we can go against global trends in the economy … KKE you believe it. After all, you’ve had an 80-year career believing it. In any case, it is an opportunity for both small and medium-sized businesses to modernize their e-commerce infrastructure and funds are available to do so. “Because companies that will not, regardless of the pandemic, will find themselves in a difficult position the next day,” Mr. Mitsotakis also said.
He even stated that: “So far, the image I have is that clicking works fine. It facilitates and addresses the problem of the collapse of Courier companies ”.
The Prime Minister even indirectly defended the courier companies, citing the data mentioned above by the Minister of Development Adonis Georgiadis that from 100,000 packages per day they reached 500,000.
He described the click away as “a breath of fresh air, a relief to the retailer being tested.”
In general, the prime minister defended the budget, saying that society is at the center and said that reducing inequalities is a central policy option for ND. He admitted, of course, that budget execution 2021 is a dynamic equation with many unknowns. He justified the government’s political decisions to deal with the economic consequences of the coronavirus, saying: “We avoided the explosion of unemployment, even with small losses of income.”
