I could simply be grateful for the investment and the benefit that Microsoft’s choice will bring to our country. But then it wouldn’t be SYRIZA. After all, the Microsoft chairman, choosing to emphasize the Greek prime minister’s “persuasiveness” and his trust in Greece and the government, spoiled Koumoundourou’s narrative on “financial cachexia.”
The reception of the investment with the great economic benefit and not only for the country by SYRIZA did not surprise anyone. When he is in the opposition, left reflexes awaken and that is why he raises the issue of safeguarding the public interest, while the hitherto hard rock tactics and accusatory speech did not allow optimism.
SYRIZA follows the line it had drawn before becoming a government. No one can forget Alexis Tsipras telling investors to avoid participating in privatizations because he himself, as prime minister, would cancel the corresponding tenders. Nor should the executives of his party close ports and airports so that the exploitation procedures do not continue.
As a government it did nothing different. It created obstacles to any major investment for which it had to obtain permission from the various components that reacted, including the youth of the party.
His announcement about Microsoft’s investment, however, highlights panic that Alexis Tsipras and his associates know that yesterday’s development “writes points” to Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the executives who executed the deal.
However, it mostly nullifies the narrative that Koumoundourou has established, regarding the government’s responsibilities for the economic recession caused worldwide by the Koronoi pandemic. A narrative that wants the country to be a victim of developments without reason and role and that is overthrown by the decision of the giant called Microsoft to choose Greece.
“This major investment shows confidence in the Greek economy, in the Greek people and in the Greek government,” said Brad Smith, possibly ignoring SYRIZA’s opposition plans and its continuing complaints about the course of the economy.
As a result, it asks through the announcement “What exactly is the contribution of the Prime Minister and his Ministers in the implementation of Microsoft’s business strategy”, but also what is the financial benefit to be obtained.
And mainly to ask “What is the economic exchange of Greece, according to archaeological law, from the digital printing of monuments and cultural heritage?”
In any case, Greece, while the turbulence in the world economy continues due to the pandemic, seems to be on the radar of foreign investors, something that gives credence to the efforts, even allowing a window of optimism.
