Metro extension: the first 6 stations that are “in process”

The state of the subsoil is expected to be the biggest challenge in the extension of metro line 2 to Ilion and Kamatero, which was referred to by the Minister of Infrastructure at the online event The Economist.

According to Costas Karamanlis, Attiko Metro aims to start the auction process of the project, with an estimated budget of 350 million euros, in the last months of 2021.

In addition to the preliminary layout, Attiko Metro has prepared transport, topographic and geological studies for the extension of Line 2 in the western suburbs of Athens.

The company’s plans include its expansion line 2 from the metro to the northwest, about 4 km from the current Anthoupolis terminal with the construction three new stations.

These are the seasons Palatiani, at the intersection of avenues Tebas and Andreas Papandreou, Ίλιον and its station San Nicola to be built on the homonymous boulevard of Kamatero.

However, the construction of tunnels and metro stations in the area is not an easy task, as Attiko Metro engineers are deeply concerned about the state of the subsoil in Anthoupolis.

In the area there is a labyrinthine network with galleries that extend for several kilometers, since from the early 1930s to the late 1950s there were lignite mines in operation in Peristeri.

Attiko Metro engineers are working on alternative designs to avoid dangerous spots and avoid static problems at new stations and aerial buildings in the area.

Line 4 and future extensions

At the time that the tender for the first section of line 4 of the metro has entered the final section with the verification of the contractor’s supporting documentation, Attiko Metro executives have begun to consider the execution of the next phases of the line .

According to the company’s plan, the total length of line 4 will reach 38.2 km, with 35 stations and five different sections.

Among the decisions to be made by the management of Attiko Metro are more than the other four sections that will be auctioned, following the completion of the construction of the 15 stations of the first phase from Veikos Grove to Goudi.

One of the most prevalent scenarios predicts its expansion line 4 to Maroussi with eight new stations. Six of them (Faros, Filothei, Sidera, Olympic Stadium, Paradisos, OTE) are expected to be built on Kifissias Avenue.

It is not ruled out, however, that priority be given to the extension of line 4 to Saint Petersburg, with six new stations (Nea Ionia, Perissos, New Philadelphia, Vassilissis Tower, Ilion, Saint Petersburg).
