The extension of the “partial blockade” until January 10 was recently announced by Chancellor Angela Merkel, after the end of the teleconference with the prime ministers of the states.
“We are still very far from the target,” he said, adding that the first EU vaccine approvals are expected by the end of December.
“Basically, the situation remains the same,” Merkel said, noting that there was no possibility of easing the restrictions as “we are still very far from the target of 50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in a week.”
The German government has already announced a limited easing of measures regarding citizens’ social contacts, for the period from December 20 to January 2.
However, restaurants, shows and gyms will be closed until at least January 10. The situation will be reassessed on January 4.
“We have to think, it’s better to be consistent for a while, rather than semi-consistent for a long time,” Bavarian Prime Minister Marcus Zeder said after the conference call.
