HE North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), the most populous state in Germany with more than 2.5 million students, was the only state that made mandatory use at the beginning of the new school year last month. mask for students of secondary education, even in class. In late August, the regional government finally lifted the measure. Since then, however, chaos has prevailed in many schools.
This is because, despite the relaxation of the measures, most schools advise their students to continue wearing the mask even in classrooms. Some municipalities, as well as the health services, have officially addressed a relevant appeal to students. In Dortmund, for example, the Inspector General of Education sent a letter to all students.
Tensions between students and teachers
This situation, however, creates serious problems in the proper functioning of the schools. School principals, quoted by West German Radio (WDR), say the situation is leading to (in large part) tensions between students, teachers and parents.
The SPD representative for education in the NRW local parliament Jochen Ot declares that he is satisfied that most of the students continue to wear the mask voluntarily during class. However, he admits that he has reports of social tensions in many schools.
The competent State Minister of Education, in an effort to de-escalate the situation, sent a letter to the schools stressing that the use of the mask is not allowed in any way that leads to phenomena of marginalization or exclusion of students.
Hundreds of students in quarantine in Bavaria
The latest data from Bavaria however, they show that schools are a major source of infection, even when students wear masks in the classroom.
On Monday, the Bavarian Ministry of Culture announced that the number of children positively diagnosed with coronavirus and young people in the state’s schools had risen to 135 from 66 last week. To these are added 43 teachers who were also positive. Four Bavarian schools closed.
“Unfortunately this school year it will be normal for health authorities to send entire classes and teachers to quarantine” commented the competent minister Michael Piazzolo. According to him, at the current stage about 2,490 students and 400 teachers are in quarantine.
There are more cases in kindergartens and nurseries of Bavaria since more than 50 have been partially or completely closed in the meantime.
Bavaria has around 1.65 million students and 150,000 teachers. There the first bell rang on September 8. Until the end of this week, the mandatory use of a mask during class is valid, with the exception of elementary schools.
