The call for a boycott of French products by Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan is “contrary to the spirit” diplomatic and trade agreements signed by Turkey with Brussels and “will take it even further “ Turkey from the EU, said a representative of the European Commission.

The EU’s agreements with Turkey provide for the free exchange of goods. “The bilateral commitments that Turkey has undertaken to fulfill under these agreements must be fully respected.”added the spokesperson.

“Calls for a boycott of the products of any member state are contrary to the spirit of these obligations and will further alienate Turkey from the European Union.”the spokesman warned.

The European Union and Turkey are bound by a customs union agreement, which entered into force on December 31, 1995.

According to the European Commission, Turkey was in 2019 the fifth trading partner of the European Union, which in turn is the first trading partner of Ankara.
