French President Emmanuel Macron said today that he respects Turkey and is ready for dialogue, adding, however, that Ankara must respect Europe’s sovereign rights and international law.
We Europeans are ready for dialogue, for the effective construction of a Pax Mediterranea (“Peace in the Mediterranean”) but not at the cost of intimidation, not at the cost of the survival of the fittest, with respect for international law, cooperation and respect among the Allies, “Macron said in a speech to the United Nations General Assembly.
“These principles are not negotiable,” he said.
It is noted that Macron had a telephone conversation today with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
For its part, the Turkish presidency said in a statement that Erdogan discussed with Macron both bilateral relations and the Eastern Mediterranean issue.
This is the first communication between the two leaders after the Turkish actions in the Eastern Mediterranean, which provoked the rhetorical and practical intervention of France in the region in general.
Previously, Ankara said it was ready to resume exploratory contacts, however essentially threw the “ball” in Athens, by its evolution, after a teleconference between the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, and the Turkish President.
