A suspect was arrested in Lyon after 52-year-old Orthodox priest Nikolaos Kakavelakis was seriously injured in a fire, according to a police source.
The source could not confirm if the detained person is the author of the attack.
The motive for the attack remains unclear, Lyon Mayor Gregory Duchess said earlier.
The prosecution has launched an investigation into an assassination attempt.
Sources told Figaro that the victim and the perpetrator knew each other and that they had some sort of disagreement in the past.
The priest was shot twice as he closed the church at around 4 p.m. local time. Le Parisien reported that the gunman attacked with a shotgun.
The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs is in contact with the French authorities about the bloody incident. The attack was condemned by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, and Archbishop Ieronymos.
The armed attack sounded the alarm, as it did after a series of attacks by Islamist extremists in France. On Thursday, three people were killed in a church in Nice from a knife attack and one victim was reportedly beheaded. The perpetrator shouted “Allah is great”.
